Denis Buffet-Auger opened a workshop at 18 Passage du Grand Cerf in Paris in 1825 and made his name with 13-key clarinets. His son Jean-Louis married Zoé Crampon in 1836, which gave the firm its name, and in 1850 the company moved its workshops to Mantes-la-Ville, where its professional clarinets are still made. Series production of Boehm-system clarinets took off there, and saxophones followed in 1866. Robert Carrée, who joined as an apprentice in 1921, created the R13, which Buffet dates to 1955, and it became the company's flagship in the United States. For decades Buffet's cheaper clarinets carried the Evette and Evette & Schaeffer names, until it put its own name on every clarinet around 1985. The plastic B12 opened new markets for Buffet more than 30 years ago and came back in a new generation in 2025. The wooden E11 was made for years in Germany, where Buffet bought the Markneukirchen factory in 2010, and recent E11s are assembled in China. Buffet turned 200 in 2025.
