Buffet Crampon · Step-up · E11
For years the E11 was the wooden clarinet students moved to after plastic, and Paul Effman Music, a New York school-band dealer, says it dominated rental inventories across the country. Buffet calls it its first wooden student clarinet. A Buffet USA product specialist wrote in 2017 that its bore is based on the R13's poly-cylindrical design but slightly larger and freer-blowing, with a 65 mm barrel to suit younger players' air. The E11 was made in Germany at a factory the dealer links to Schreiber. When Schreiber & Keilwerth went insolvent, Buffet filled the gap with an E11 France with silver keys and an E11 with nickel keys also made in France, and the nickel version drew complaints about leaking tone holes and poor fit. Wikipedia records Buffet buying the Markneukirchen factory in 2010, and the German E11 returned in 2011. The E11 France gave way to the near-identical E12F. Paul Effman Music wrote in 2023 that the current E11 is assembled in China, with silver-plated keys and bladder pads, and Buffet still offers a nickel-key version. Read the origin stamp, because the German, French and Chinese runs aren't the same clarinet.
A good wooden step-up for a student two or three years in, and the model many clarinet teachers ask for by name. Check for cracks and find out which version you're getting.
Build and caseE11
The origin stamp gives a rough era. Germany is the long-running version, France points to the short run around 2010 to 2012, and recent E11s are assembled in China, according to Paul Effman Music.
The nickel-key E11 made in France around 2010 drew reports of leaking tone holes, poor fit and finish. Any E11 is grenadilla, so cracks from fast temperature changes or moisture left in the bore are the main risk, and a clarinet that sat dry for months can bind keys until the wood rehydrates.

Buying guide
We'd buy an E11 titled serviced or repadded by a US repairer, like the one with all new pads and a new Debut mouthpiece at $450 delivered, below the $525–925 band most E11s ask. There are at least 146 for sale, and ones titled serviced or repadded ask $450–1,207 delivered. Read the origin stamp, since the German, French and Chinese E11s aren't the same clarinet, and ask for close photos of the upper joint and joint ends for cracks in the wood. Budget for a shop check-up on any one not titled serviced, and skip zero-feedback listings whose photo shows only a closed case.
