Julian Bliss started on the clarinet at four and turned professional at twelve, and in the late 2000s he worked with Leblanc and the Canadian designer Morrie Backun on a line of affordable clarinets under his name. Leblanc had belonged to Conn-Selmer since 2004, and the Bliss clarinets were made in the USA. There were three: the LB210 with an unstained grenadilla body, the LB310 with a composite body and a Backun wood barrel, and the all-composite LB320 for students. All of them have ringless Backun-designed bells and barrels, a voicing groove in the bell, adjustment screws on the long keys and black nickel-plated keys that make them easy to spot in photos. A Florida band director who tried them at a 2009 music educators' conference loved the response, though a Texas clarinet professor found his test clarinet ran sharp and reported that Conn-Selmer asked Backun to bring the pitch down. Kessler & Sons, a Las Vegas clarinet shop, counts three generations of the wooden 210, the last with a US-made bell and barrel. The line was discontinued in 2016 and replaced by the Leblanc Serenade.

Who it suits
The wooden LB210 is a step-up for a student a few years in, and the composite LB320 is a sturdy first clarinet. Check which model a listing is, because one that just says Bliss could be either.

How to date one
Kessler & Sons counts three runs of the wooden 210, the second with a Backun-made bell and barrel from Canada and the L210B with a US-made bell and barrel. The line was discontinued in 2016, so any Bliss is from about 2009 to 2016.
What to check before you buy
Early Bliss clarinets were reported to play sharp, especially with a mouthpiece other than the one supplied, so check the tuning with the mouthpiece you'll use. The wooden LB210 can crack like any grenadilla clarinet.
01Which model: Find the model number in the photos or ask the seller to read it. LB210 or L210B means grenadilla, while LB310 and LB320 are composite.
02Cracks: On a wooden LB210, ask for close photos of the upper joint and both tenon ends. Good wood shows no dark hairline running along the grain.
03Key plating: Look at the black nickel keys in the photos, especially the ones your fingers touch most. Even color with no bare patches means the keys haven't been worn hard.
04Pads: Zoom in on the pads in the photos. They should sit flat and whole, with no tears, swelling or loose edges.
05Tenon corks: Look at the cork rings on each joint end in the photos. They should be whole and even, with no tape or thread wrapped around them.
06In the case: Look for the Bliss mouthpiece, ligature and cap in the photos. The supplied mouthpiece was designed to bring the pitch down, so it's worth having.
07Tuning: On arrival, warm the clarinet up and check a few notes against a tuner with your usual mouthpiece. It should sit near pitch without pulling the barrel out a long way.
For a student moving up to wood we'd look at the one titled L210 in grenadilla at $900 delivered, and for a first clarinet the composite LB320 with a ProTec case at $574. There are at least 10 Bliss clarinets for sale, so the $550–1,050 delivered band is a thin read, and many titles say only Bliss, so ask which model it is (LB210 or L210B is wood, LB310 and LB320 are composite). Bliss clarinets were reported to play sharp with mouthpieces other than the one supplied, so look for the Bliss mouthpiece in the photos, and on a wooden one ask for close photos of the upper joint for cracks. Skip the two zero-feedback listings titled "Used Bliss Le Blanc Clarinet in GREAT CONDITION" at $1,425 and $1,520 delivered.
