Look up Selmer and you'll find two different makers. Henri Selmer Paris builds professional saxophones in France, and its own site warns that the Selmer-branded horns from Conn-Selmer, the American company that also distributes Paris instruments, aren't made in France and shouldn't be confused with them. The AS500 is one of those American-brand horns, a student alto sold under the Selmer name with an Aristocrat badge. After Selmer's owners dropped the US-built Bundy line in the years after 1995, its student woodwinds came from Asian factories, and AS500s on the used market are stamped Taiwan. Selmer designed the AS500 around young hands and school use. It has nickel-plated keys for durability, a high F# key, an adjustable thumb rest, a guide that protects the right-hand trill key rods, and an octave key pin set flush with the neck receiver so it isn't damaged when a student forgets the end plug. WorldWideSax, a vintage sax shop that has sold several, calls it great for kids, with stronger nickel keys and very easy ergonomics, and good for pep and marching band too.

Buying a first instrument?
A solid first alto for a middle schooler, with a high F# key the YAS-26 doesn't have. Make sure the listing says AS500 and Selmer USA or Conn-Selmer, not Selmer Paris, so you know which horn you're getting.

How to date one
Conn-Selmer publishes serial tables for several of its brands but none for Selmer USA saxophones, so the serial won't give you a year. Don't run it through a Selmer Paris chart, which only covers horns made in France.
What to check before you buy
Student horns like this see heavy school use, so expect dried or sticky pads, dings on the body and bow, and the odd bent post or key. The flush octave pin was Selmer's answer to the classic break, a pin bent when the horn is stored without its end plug.
01Which Selmer: Read the bell engraving and body stamp in the photos. An AS500 has Selmer in Gothic-style letters and no Made in France stamp, so a listing calling it Selmer Paris is wrong.
02Neck receiver: Look at the top of the neck receiver in the photos. The octave key pin should sit flush and straight, and the neck screw should be there.
03Side keys: Check the right-hand side keys and their guide in the photos. The rods should be straight and the keys level, with no gaps or bends.
04Low notes: Ask the seller for a short video playing low C, B and B-flat softly. Each note should speak cleanly without a hard push.
05Pads: Zoom in on the pads in the photos, especially the G# and low E-flat. They should be flat and smooth, with no tears, dark rings or hardened patches.
06Dents and posts: Check the body and bell in the photos for dents near tone holes and for posts pushed in. A dent at a tone hole or a crooked post needs a shop before the horn will seal.
07In the case: Look for the neck, mouthpiece, cap, ligature and case in the photos. Fold any missing piece into your offer, and skip a horn with no neck.
For a first alto we'd buy the AS500 titled just serviced and plays great at $650 with free shipping from a US repair seller, or a complete one with case and mouthpiece for about $500 delivered plus a shop check-up. There are at least 25 for sale, almost all in the US, and most complete ones ask $500–900 delivered. It's a Taiwan-made student horn sold under the Selmer USA name, not a Selmer Paris, so skip the asks over $1,000, like the $1,847 one titled Student and the $2,096 zero-feedback one with $95.88 shipping, a known scam pattern. School horns like this see heavy use, so ask for a video playing down to low B-flat and zoom in on the pads in the photos.
