Like its alto sibling, the Selmer STS711 shares a number with a student horn, so read the letters before anything else. The STS711 is Conn-Selmer's entry-level professional tenor, made by Selmer USA in collaboration with Henri Selmer Paris, and the Paris factory makes its neck and its TMX2 mouthpiece. The body has ribbed post-to-rib-to-body construction, Mark VI style hand engraving, blued steel springs and Pisoni Pro leather pads with metal resonators. Saxquest, the St. Louis sax shop, adds double arms on the bell keys and a teardrop front F key to that list. PM Woodwind puts it in the introductory professional class, with features common on pro instruments and rare on student ones, and aims it at players who love the sax and play at church or at home. You'll see it in clear lacquer, matte, silver plate and black nickel. The Prelude TS711 is the other horn with that number, a student tenor for beginning band with a ribbed body and a detachable body-to-bow joint. Listings mix them up, and only the STS711 has the Paris neck.

Who it suits
Not a beginner's tenor. It suits a high school or adult player moving up from a student tenor, and if a cheap beginner listing says TS711, it's probably the Prelude student model.

How to date one
Conn-Selmer publishes no serial table for Selmer USA saxophones, and the Selmer Paris chart doesn't apply, so a serial won't date one.
What to check before you buy
The Paris neck is what sets this horn apart, so make sure it's the one on the horn and that it hasn't been pulled down. Used ones still need the usual check for dried pads and lost adjustment.
01Model letters: Check the listing and the body stamp for STS711, and look at the bell engraving. A Prelude TS711 is a plain student horn, while the STS711 has the hand-engraved bell.
02Paris neck: Ask the seller to confirm the neck is the original Henri Selmer Paris one and to photograph it from the side. The bend should be smooth and round, with no flattened section under the octave key.
03Engraving and finish: Look at the bell engraving in the photos. Crisp engraving under an even finish means original, while soft, blurry engraving or drips suggest a refinish.
04Low notes: Ask for a short video playing low C, B and B-flat softly. Each note should speak cleanly without a hard push.
05Pads and resonators: Zoom in on the pads in the photos. They should be matching brown leather with metal resonators, with no tears or hardened rings.
06Bell keys: Check the bell keys and their double arms in the photos. The arms should be straight and the pad cups level, with no dents in the bell around them.
07Octave keys: On arrival, finger low D, then G, then A, and press the thumb octave key on each. Every note should jump up an octave cleanly, which shows both octave pads are working.
This page is the Selmer STS711, the step-up tenor with a neck and TMX2 mouthpiece made by Henri Selmer Paris, not the Prelude TS711 student tenor by Conn-Selmer that shares the number. No used STS711 is for sale right now, just at least 3 new ones from US dealers at $3,995–4,359 with free shipping, so the band is new pricing, not a used market read. A used one should ask well under those new prices, and before buying one you'd want photos of the actual horn, the Paris neck in place with no pull-down, and the pads. It isn't a beginner's tenor, and a cheap listing that just says TS711 is probably the Prelude student model.
