Yamaha · Professional · YAS-62 · 1979–present
Yamaha's 62 has been a favorite of band directors for decades and in production since 1979. It grew out of the YAS-61 of 1969, and saxophonist Eugene Rousseau, who worked with Yamaha from 1972, helped develop the series. Yamaha updated it in 2003 as the 62II, with new keywork and the G1 neck, and again in 2013 as the 62III, with a new 62 neck and a redesigned low B to C# connection. Here's what trips buyers up. Every one of them is stamped YAS-62 on the body, so the generation has to be read from the details. Early horns have the Yamaha name printed on the bell rather than stamped, often faded to purple, and a long wrap-around key guard. The current receiver takes Yamaha's Custom Z and EX necks, and the bell is hand engraved. Dealers list used 62s as made in Japan, and the 62III comes in lacquer, silver plate, amber lacquer or unlacquered brass. Yamaha pitched the 62III at school-age and college players, and a clean 62 of any generation is a horn a serious student can keep for good.
More horn than a beginner needs. It's the step a serious high school or college player makes after a student or intermediate alto.
Build and caseYAS-62
Every generation is stamped YAS-62 on the body, so read the features. A printed bell logo and long wrap-around key guard mark a first-generation horn, a G1 neck points to a 62II, and a neck stamped 62 means a 62III. Kessler & Sons notes that the //04 code some sellers quote is a box revision of the 62III, not a fourth generation. Yamaha doesn't publish a serial chart, but Yamaha USA can sometimes look up a horn it distributed, with records going back to the 1990s.
Like any older sax, a used 62 usually needs pad work, and first-generation horns are now more than 30 years old. Copies of the 62 exist, so check that the engraving, logo and stamps look like a real Yamaha.

Buying guide
The YAS-62 is a pro alto, the step a serious high school or college player makes, and we'd buy a US one from an established seller, like the 62II titled very good with a case at $2,444 delivered, under the $2,500–3,275 band most complete 62s ask. There are at least 146 for sale across three generations, all stamped YAS-62, and a printed, often purple bell logo marks a first-generation horn, a G1 neck a 62II and a neck stamped 62 a 62III. New ones ask about $3,265 delivered at the median, and half of the 18 US listings we found come from zero-feedback accounts, several with the same $76.38 or $95.88 shipping, a known scam pattern. Any used 62 will likely want pad work, so budget for a shop check-up unless it's titled serviced, and skip the $10,000 listing, whose photo shows a tenor.

The lowest delivered 62 here at $1,950, from a 98.7% Japan seller, with $150 of that in shipping. The title gives no generation or condition, so ask for photos of the bell logo and neck and what comes in the case.
