The YCL-650 is where Yamaha's clarinet line turns professional without reaching its Custom models. Yamaha pitches the current YCL-650II at serious players on a budget and says its bell, barrel and tone-hole specifications sit close to the top-of-the-line Custom SEV. The body is selected, seasoned grenadilla left in a natural finish, and the tapered tone holes are undercut by hand for intonation and tonal balance. The first YCL-650 had Lucien double skin pads, blue steel needle springs, threaded posts, a machined bore, a 65 mm barrel and a bell with a resonance chamber for the low notes, and it shipped with a 4CM hard rubber mouthpiece and a silver-plated ligature. The second generation moved to leather pads, took its bell and barrel design straight from the Custom models, lengthened the E/B levers and has its keys adjusted by hand using Custom-model techniques. Dawkes Music, a large UK woodwind dealer, says teachers often put the 650 beside Buffet's E13 on their recommendation lists. Wikipedia's list of Yamaha products names the YCL-64 as its predecessor. The pads are the quickest way to tell the two 650 generations apart in photos.

Who it suits
This is more clarinet than a beginner needs. It suits a committed high schooler, a college player or an adult coming back to the clarinet, as long as the wood checks out.

A II in the model name and leather pads mark the current YCL-650II. Earlier 650s used Lucien double skin pads.
What to check before you buy
Like any grenadilla clarinet it can crack after fast temperature changes or when moisture is left in the bore, and the joints are most at risk. Pads that have deformed leak air and spoil the tuning, so an unserviced older 650 may be due for new pads.
01Cracks: Ask for close photos of the upper joint, its top tone holes and both tenon ends. Good wood shows no dark hairline running along the grain.
02Crack repairs: Ask the seller whether the clarinet has ever cracked and who repaired it. A pinned crack from a repair shop can play as before, but ask to see it up close.
03Version: Find the YCL-650 marking in the photos and ask the seller what pads it has. Leather pads and a II in the name mean the current version.
04Pads: Zoom in on the pads in the photos. They should sit flat and whole, with no tears, swelling or loose edges.
05Tenon corks: Look at the cork rings on each joint end in the photos. They should be whole and even, with no tape or thread wrapped around them.
06In the case: Look for the 4CM mouthpiece, ligature and cap in the photos. Fold a missing mouthpiece into your offer if you don't already own one.
07Tuning: On arrival, warm the clarinet up and check a few notes in each register against a tuner. It should stay close to pitch from the low notes to the top of the staff.
We'd start with the Japan dealer's 650 titled tested, with its case, at $656 delivered, or pay $800 for the cased one from a US seller if easy returns matter more. There are at least 72 for sale, and the $900–1,550 delivered band is mostly Japan dealers, while the five US listings ask $800–1,512 and new ones ask about $2,520. This is a pro clarinet for a serious high schooler or an adult, not a first instrument, and it's grenadilla, so ask for close photos of the upper joint and joint ends for cracks and look at the pads (leather pads and a II in the name mean the current version). Skip the $2,680 delivered one from Japan that shows a new-model stock photo, and pay only through eBay checkout if you try a zero-feedback US listing.
