Yamaha sells its 400 series trombones as intermediate horns with many professional features. The YSL-447G is the large-bore one, which Yamaha calls a large orchestral bore for powerful projection. Its numbers back that up. The bore is 0.547 inch, the same figure Yamaha lists for its professional YSL-610, and the bell is an 8-1/2 inch one-piece gold brass bell, larger than the 8 inch bell on the student YSL-354 and YSL-200AD. It has a chrome-plated nickel-silver inner slide, a one-piece drawn brass outer slide and a balance weight. It's a straight tenor with no F attachment. That version is the YSL-448G, and the YSL-445G is the medium-large 0.525 inch bore sister. The 447G also takes a large-shank mouthpiece, where the student YSL-200AD uses a medium shank, so expect to change mouthpieces when you move up. Origin stamps vary, with Reverb's catalog listing US horns as Japanese and European owners of the 447GE II reporting Chinese ones, so buy on condition and the model stamp.
This is a step-up for a high school trombonist moving to a bigger-bore horn. If the band director wants an F attachment, the model to look for is the YSL-448G.
Build and caseYSL-447G
As on any trombone, the slide is the costly part, so dents and bent tubes matter most. Big dents in the bell are worth avoiding, while dings on braces and the balance weight don't affect the sound.

Buying guide
There's no used YSL-447G for sale right now, just one new from a US dealer at $2,283 with free shipping, so that's what new costs and there's no used market to read. A used one should cost well under it, so if one turns up, ask for a video of the slide moving the full length and photos along both slide tubes, since the slide is the costly part. It's a large-bore step-up horn that takes a large-shank mouthpiece (it comes with a 48L), so a player moving up from a YSL-200AD will need a new mouthpiece too. If the band director wants an F attachment, look for a YSL-448G instead.
