The AD stands for Advantage, a line Yamaha made for music store rental fleets. Hyson Music explained it in 2011. The Advantage instruments match the standard Yamaha student models, so the YSL-200AD is the YSL-354 trombone with different engraving and a tougher rental case built to stack on a store shelf. Yamaha's current specs line up, with a 0.500 inch medium bore and an 8 inch yellow brass bell on both. Yamaha lists a gold brass leadpipe, a chrome-plated inner slide and a one-piece drawn outer slide, which keeps an accurate diameter for an airtight, smooth slide. The bell seam is laser welded. The beginner touches are worth knowing about. A balance weight makes it easier for a beginner to hold, large nickel-silver braces guard the slide if the horn is dropped, and a slide lock keeps the slide from sliding off when the horn is carried. Because the line was built for rentals, a lot of used ones are ex-rental horns, and the slide is where a rental life shows.
A very good first trombone, and the same horn as the YSL-354, so shop both model numbers. If your child's arms can't yet reach the far slide positions, ask the director about Yamaha's compact YSL-350C instead.

The slide is the part that suffers, from dents and bent tubes after drops or a rough rental life. A stuck mouthpiece and a stiff tuning slide from sitting unused are common and easier to fix.

Buying guide
For a first trombone we'd buy the Advantage that comes with a play test video at $500 delivered, inside the $460–725 band. There are at least 49 for sale, nearly all in the US, and since Yamaha built this line for rental fleets, many are ex-rental or school horns, like the liquidation ones with numbered tags at $465 delivered. The slide is where a rental life shows, so ask for a video of it moving the full length with no sticky spots, look along both tubes for dents, and budget for a shop check-up. The YSL-200AD is the YSL-354 with different engraving, so shop both model numbers, and skip the $1,200 one from a zero-feedback seller, about 2.4 times the median.
