Yamaha's first wind instrument was a trumpet, the YTR-1 of 1966, and the student trumpet has been the front door to the brand ever since. The YTR-2330 took over from the YTR-2335, which Hyson Music calls the de facto standard student trumpet for well over a decade. The changes were small and practical. Monel pistons replaced the old nickel-plated ones, the main tuning slide became a soldered three-piece part that no longer needed a brace, and the bell was redesigned. It's still a two-piece yellow brass bell, 4-7/8 inches across, on a 0.459 inch medium-large bore, the same bore Yamaha uses on its Xeno pro horns. Yamaha built the design around free blowing and weight balance, and the third slide trigger adjusts to fit a small hand. The model came out by the early 2010s, US dealers listing it in 2011 and Yamaha Japan in November 2012. You'll see these stamped with different countries, since Yamaha now builds wind instruments in Japan, Indonesia and China. Hyson Music, a Yamaha dealer, says the Chinese-assembled ones are built to the same standards, so buy on condition.
This is the safe first trumpet for a child starting band, and Hyson Music calls it the trumpet more educators recommend than any other. Look for one whose valves and slides move freely, with a mouthpiece in the case, then let a shop give it a check-up.
Build and caseYTR-2330
Yamaha doesn't publish a serial number chart for its trumpets, so dating is rough. The model stamp does most of the work. A YTR-2335 is the older model, and a YTR-2330 was on sale in the US by 2011 and launched in Japan in November 2012.
Like any school trumpet, it can carry red rot in the leadpipe where breath moisture sits, a mouthpiece jammed in the receiver, and dents from being dropped. Valves that wobble in their casings mean real wear.

Buying guide
For a first trumpet we'd buy a US 2330 with its case, like the one asking $558 delivered from a 100% seller, then budget for a shop check-up. There are at least 186 for sale, and the $700–1,000 typical band leans on Japan dealers, who ask $596–1,502 delivered with freight and no US dealer support, while US used ones ask $304–1,215. Look for valves and slides that move freely, a mouthpiece in the case (the 11B4 is standard) and no pink red-rot spots on the leadpipe. A refurbished one from a US dealer asks $1,682, so that's the ceiling for any used one, and we'd skip the 2330S whose title three Japan sellers share.
