When Vincent Bach sold his company to Selmer in 1961, Selmer kept him on to design its student brass, and the cheaper Mercedes II horns of the late 1960s gave way to Bach's TR-numbered student line. Conn-Selmer's parts catalog still lists three generations of it, the TR300, TR300H and TR300H2, plus S-suffix versions. Bach's 2004 catalog pitched the TR300H at beginners, promising they'd progress faster on it. It has the same 0.459-inch medium-large bore as a Stradivarius 180, a two-piece bell, Monel pistons, a first slide thumb hook and two water keys. The TR300H2 that followed switched to stainless steel pistons and a red brass leadpipe, and Bach still built it in the USA. It's a plain, sturdy school horn. Bach's current student trumpets carry BTR numbers instead, and the BTR301 is today's premium student trumpet, built in the USA with a gold brass leadpipe that Bach picked for corrosion resistance. A used TR300 is mostly about condition. Look for free valves, slides that move, a clean leadpipe and a mouthpiece that isn't stuck in the receiver.
A good first trumpet for a kid starting band, and the kind of horn many school programs rent. Buy one with valves and slides that move freely, and plan on a quick shop check before the first rehearsal.
Build and caseTR300
Bach doesn't publish serial dates for its student horns. BachLoyalist notes that a Bach serial starting with a letter marks a student or intermediate model, which its Stradivarius serial list doesn't cover. Go by the model name instead: TR300 and TR300H are the older horns, TR300H2 the later one.
Dented slides and sticking valves are the usual faults, and Conn's own care leaflet calls both close-tolerance work for a technician. Mouthpieces get jammed in the receiver, and water key corks go soft with moisture and need replacing.

Buying guide
We'd buy a complete TR300 with a case and mouthpiece from a high-feedback US seller, like the one titled with case, mouthpiece and accessories at $282 delivered. There are at least 71 for sale, almost all in the US, and most complete ones ask $310–625 delivered. The TR300, TR300H and TR300H2 share this page and are the same plain school horn in different generations, so pick on condition. Ask for a video of each valve springing back and the slides pulling, look for pink red-rot spots on the leadpipe, and budget for a shop check-up on any used one. Skip the $1,100 TR300H2 from a zero-feedback seller, about 3.1 times the median, and treat the title "w/ Case and Bach 7C Mouthpiece USA Brass" with care, since three different sellers use it.
