Bach TR400 Trumpet
The TR400 is the dressed-up member of Bach's TR student family. It's easy to take it for an intermediate horn, but Conn-Selmer's own parts catalog files it as a student trumpet, so think of it as a better-equipped first horn. The catalog describes a 0.460-inch bore, a red brass mouthpipe, Monel pistons, a first slide thumb hook, deluxe engraving and lacquer, with a Bach 7C mouthpiece and a backpack-style case. Monel is the piston metal Bach still uses on the Stradivarius 180, while the later TR300H2 switched to stainless steel. Red brass has more copper and less zinc than yellow brass, and red rot is zinc leaching out of brass, so a red brass pipe is a sensible choice for a school horn. Conn-Selmer doesn't list when or where it was made, so judge the horn in front of you. Look for valves that move freely, a clean mouthpipe, straight slides and the original case. If a TR400 and a TR300 are in the same shape, the TR400 adds the deluxe engraving and the red brass mouthpipe.

Buying a first instrument?
A solid first trumpet, a step nicer than the TR300 but still a student horn. A player who has outgrown a beginner trumpet should look at an intermediate or pro model instead.

How to date one
Bach doesn't publish serial dates for its student horns, and BachLoyalist notes that letter-prefixed Bach serials fall outside its Stradivarius list. Treat the age as rough and judge the horn on condition.
What to check before you buy
Like any school trumpet it collects dents in the slides and sticky valves, which Conn's old care leaflet says need a technician. Water key corks wear out with moisture and need replacing.
- 01Valves: Ask the seller for a video pressing each valve several times. They should rise quickly and evenly without sticking.
- 02Mouthpipe: Zoom in on the mouthpipe and the bends of the slides. You want even color with no pink or red patches, which point to red rot.
- 03Slides: Ask for a video of the main and third slides being pulled and pushed back. They should move smoothly without pliers marks or bent tubes.
- 04Dents: Check the slides and the tubing around the valves in the photos. Dents there are shop work, so price them in or skip the horn.
- 05Engraving: Look for the deluxe bell engraving and the TR400 model name in the photos. The model name should match the listing title.
- 06Case and mouthpiece: Check the photos for the backpack case and a Bach 7C mouthpiece. Missing either is a reason to offer less.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 12, 2026There's no US TR400 for sale right now. All 10 listings are Japan dealers asking $1,203–3,985 delivered, so the $1,425–2,175 band is an import price, and a horn bought this way comes with freight risk and no US dealer support. Most of them share photos, with the same picture under two to four dealer names, so before paying, ask for photos of the actual horn and its serial. The TR400 is a student trumpet, a TR300 with deluxe engraving and a red brass mouthpipe, and used TR300s in the US ask about $310–625 delivered, so for a first horn we'd buy one of those instead. Skip the $3,985 listing, about 2.5 times the median.
