Yamaha · Step-up · YTR-4335GII · 1998–present (YTR-4335G, then GII)
In Yamaha's model numbers the first digit is the grade, and a 4 means intermediate, the step a player takes after the student 2000s. The 3 is the key of B-flat and the G marks a gold brass bell, so a YTR-4335G is an intermediate B-flat trumpet with a gold brass bell. Yamaha says the gold brass gives a richer, wider range of tone colors. A collector's model chart has the 4335G arriving in 1998 after the YTR-4325G, and Yamaha Japan released today's YTR-4335GII in November 2012. That GII shares a lot with the student YTR-2330. Both have a 0.459 inch medium-large bore, a two-piece 4-7/8 inch bell, Monel pistons and an 11B4 mouthpiece in the case. The differences are the gold brass bell and a brace on the main tuning slide, which Yamaha says focuses the sound, while the 2330 dropped its brace. That makes this a gentle upgrade. It feels familiar to a student who learned on a Yamaha, and the bell gives a warmer sound. Look for the G in the model stamp, since that's the point of the horn.
A good second trumpet for a player a few years in whose teacher suggests a step-up. A brand-new beginner is just as well served by the YTR-2330, which shares its bore and mouthpiece.
Build and caseYTR-4335GII
Yamaha doesn't publish a serial chart, so date one by its model stamp. A YTR-4335G is the older generation and a YTR-4335GII is from late 2012 on. The S after the G means silver plate.
Expect the same wear as any school trumpet, including red rot in the leadpipe, stuck slides and a jammed mouthpiece. Check the main slide brace for broken solder joints, since it's the one part the student model doesn't have.

Buying guide
For a player stepping up, we'd buy a US GII like the one at $1,019 delivered from a 99.8% seller, and keep the 11B4 mouthpiece from their student Yamaha, since it's the same one this horn comes with. There are at least 131 for sale, mostly from Japan dealers, and their asks plus freight set most of the $1,025–1,325 band. US used ones ask $1,019–1,750 delivered and new ones about $1,499. A 4335G is the older generation and a GII is from late 2012 on, with an S for silver, so check that the model stamp in the photos matches the title and look at the main slide brace for broken solder. Skip the $2,491 GSII from Japan, about 2.2 times the median, unless you want the Silent Brass SB7J set that comes with it.
