Gemeinhardt calls the 3SHB a longtime favorite for students upgrading, and its name spells out the recipe. In Gemeinhardt's codes the 3 marks its French open-hole series, SH means a sterling silver headjoint, and B means a B footjoint. The body, keys and footjoint are silver-plated. A plain 3SHB has inline G, and a 3OSHB has the G key offset, the layout Gemeinhardt artist Ali Ryerson calls ergonomically better. The serial chart shows 3SHBs from 1981, and the model is still in the catalog, now with either the J1 headjoint or the newer NG1, sold as the 3SHB NG. Gemeinhardt lists an E facilitator and a gold-plated lip plate as options, and its FAQ says the 3B LTD is the same flute with a gold-plated lip plate. A 3SB is the next rung, with a sterling body and footjoint as well. The 3SHB suits a middle or high school player who's ready for open holes and the low B. Check which G layout you're getting, since the O is easy to miss in a listing title, and look up the serial, since a 1980s flute and a 2009 one are a long way apart in age.

Who it suits
A step-up flute for a player a year or more into band, ready for open holes and the low B. If your child started on offset G, look for a 3OSHB, because a plain 3SHB is inline.

How to date one
Gemeinhardt's serial chart lists 3SHB serials from 345200 to 404199 for about 1981–1992, and runs in the 692000s to 707000s for 2004–2009. Look for the model number stamped next to the serial on the body.
What to check before you buy
Pads wear and leak like on any flute, and an older one may need a full repad. The longer B footjoint adds pads and keys to keep sealed, and older Gemeinhardts can have tuning quirks from the company's older scale.
01Model letters: Ask for a photo of the model stamp on the body. It should read 3SHB for inline G or 3OSHB for offset G.
02Serial and age: Ask for the serial number and check it against Gemeinhardt's chart. Then judge the pads and tuning by the flute's real age, not the listing's description.
03Pads and leaks: Ask for a short video playing down to low B and up into the high notes. Clear low notes with no buzz or fuzz mean the pads, including the footjoint's, are sealing.
04Open holes and plugs: Look at the open-hole keys in the photos and ask whether plugs come with it. Plugs help a player who's still learning to cover the holes.
05Head cork: On arrival, slide the cleaning rod into the headjoint and look through the embouchure hole. The line on the rod should sit dead center in the hole.
06Headjoint and dents: Look at the headjoint in the photos for a sterling stamp and for dents near the lip plate. A dent around the embouchure hole is there for good.
07Keys and rods: Look along the rods in the photos and check that every key sits level. Straight rods and evenly closed keys mean nobody bent the mechanism.
08Case and cover: Look for the case, cover and cleaning rod in the photos. A rod with a marked line lets you check the head cork yourself.
We'd buy the 3SHB titled reconditioned and play ready from a US repairer at $789 delivered, or the one with its case and cover at $500 and budget for a shop service. There are at least 21 for sale, mostly asking $575–875 delivered. A plain 3SHB has inline G and a 3OSHB has offset G, so match what your child learned on, and ask for a video playing down to low B, since the B footjoint adds pads to keep sealed. Look up the serial too, because a 1980s flute and a 2009 one are a long way apart in age, and pay only through eBay checkout if you try a zero-feedback seller.
