Gemeinhardt's catalog and serial chart don't list a 33OS. Search for one and you find the 33 series flutes with offset G, the 33OSB, 33OSHB and 33OSSB, and this page covers them. The 33s are Gemeinhardt's professional line, hand assembled and finished, with pointed key arms, Pisoni Lucien deluxe pads, French open-hole keys and a B footjoint on every model. The letters tell you how much silver you get. The 33SHB has a sterling NG1 headjoint on a silver-plated body, the 33SB adds a sterling body and footjoint, and the 33SSB makes the keys solid silver too. An O after the 33 means offset G, so the 33OSB is the sterling-bodied flute in the offset layout. Gemeinhardt now offers its C1 Galway Crusader headjoint, a blend of sterling silver and platinum, on these flutes at extra cost. The family goes back further than the current line, since Gemeinhardt's serial chart maps its older 3SS and 3SSB solid silver flutes to today's 33SS and 33SSB and lists 33SSB serials from 1990. For a player moving on from a plated step-up flute, the 33SB and 33OSB are the ones with a sterling body.

Who it suits
This isn't a beginner flute. It suits an advanced high school or adult player, and the letters matter, so read the model stamp before you trust the title.

How to date one
Gemeinhardt's serial chart lists 33SSB serials from 648200 to 652300 for 1990–1991, the earlier 3SSB from 1982 to 1991 and the 3SS from 1958 to 1990. It doesn't break out the current 33SB and 33SHB runs, so ask the seller for the serial and the original paperwork.
What to check before you buy
Listings mix up the 33 variants, so a title can promise more silver than the flute has. Sterling silver tarnishes, and heavy polishing wears the surface and can damage the pads.
01Model letters: Ask for a clear photo of the model stamp on the body. 33OSB, 33OSHB and 33OSSB are different flutes, so match the stamp to the title.
02Silver stamps: Ask for photos of any Silver, Sterling or 925 stamps on the headjoint, body and footjoint. On a 33SB or 33OSB, all three sections should be marked as sterling.
03Headjoint: Ask which headjoint it has, NG1 or C1 Galway Crusader, and look for its marking in the photos. A matching headjoint means it's the flute's original setup or a known upgrade.
04Pads and leaks: Ask for a short video playing down to low B and up into the high notes, and ask when it was last serviced. Clear low notes with no buzz or fuzz mean the pads are sealing.
05Head cork: On arrival, slide the cleaning rod into the headjoint and look through the embouchure hole. The line on the rod should sit dead center in the hole.
06Dents and keys: Look along the tubing and rods in the photos, especially near the lip plate. A dent around the embouchure hole is there for good, and every key should sit level.
07Case and cover: Look for the case, cover and cleaning rod in the photos. A complete set suggests the flute was looked after.
The flute we'd look at first is the used 33OSB, the sterling-bodied offset G model, with its case and cover at $1,599 delivered from a 100% seller. There are at least 4 for sale and only that one is used, so the $1,550–2,700 delivered band isn't a market read. The others are a new 33OSHB from a dealer at $1,479 and two open-box flutes at $2,530 and $3,140. Read the model stamp before you trust a title, since 33OSHB, 33OSB and 33OSSB carry different amounts of silver, and check the one titled 33OSB "All Silver", because a 33OSB has silver-plated keys. This is a flute for an advanced high schooler or an adult, not a beginner.

The lowest delivered 33 series flute here, new from a US dealer at $1,479 with free shipping. It's a 33OSHB, a sterling headjoint on a silver-plated body, so it has less silver than a 33OSB, and the photo is a stock image.
