The YFL-462 is where a Yamaha student flute turns sterling. Yamaha's 400 series uses sterling silver for the headjoint, body and footjoint, with silver-plated nickel silver keys, while the 300 series puts a sterling headjoint on a nickel silver body. Yamaha released the 462 in the US in January 2016, replacing the YFL-461, with French open-hole keys, offset G, pointed arms on the keys you don't finger and the same CY headjoint as its student flutes. The version you'll see most is the 462H, with a B footjoint and a gizmo key, a small extra lever that helps the high C at the top of the range. A plain 462 has a C footjoint, and the 462H/LPGP adds a gold-plated lip plate. Flute Center, the New York flute specialist, recommends the B foot for its extra low note. It came with a French-style case and a case cover. The 472 adds a split E and the 482 has inline G. A sterling headjoint on a plated nickel silver body is the 362's recipe, so check the model number on the body if a listing's photos don't add up.

Who it suits
This is a step-up flute for a player a year or two into lessons, with open holes, sterling silver and usually the low B. If you want the B footjoint, make sure the listing says 462H, since a plain 462 has a C foot.

How to date one
Go by the model number. Yamaha released the YFL-462H in the US in January 2016, replacing the YFL-461, so a 462 dates from then or later. We couldn't find a serial chart that Yamaha publishes for its flutes.
What to check before you buy
Pads wear and leak like on any flute, so ask when it was last serviced. Sterling silver tarnishes, and heavy polishing wears the finish and can damage the pads.
01Model and foot: Ask for a photo of the model number and the footjoint. A 462H has the longer B foot with the small gizmo lever, and a plain 462 stops at C.
02Pads and leaks: Ask for a short video playing down to the lowest note and up into the high notes, and ask when it was last serviced. Clear low notes with no buzz or fuzz mean the pads are sealing.
03Head cork: On arrival, slide the cleaning rod into the headjoint and look through the embouchure hole. The line on the rod should sit dead center in the hole.
04Lip plate and dents: Look closely at the headjoint around the lip plate in the photos. Small dings on the body can be lifted by a tech, but a dent near the embouchure hole is there for good.
05Keys and rods: Look along the rods in the photos and check that every key sits level. Straight rods and evenly closed keys mean nobody bent the mechanism.
06Tarnish and polish: Look at the tubing in the photos for tarnish or worn patches. Even tarnish is normal on sterling and cleans up, but a glossy, rubbed look around the keys suggests heavy polishing.
07Joints: On arrival, fit the headjoint and footjoint with a gentle twist. They should go on snugly with no grease, no wobble and no forcing.
08Case and cover: Look for the French-style case, its cover and the cleaning rod in the photos. A missing rod is easy to replace, but you'll want one with the line for the cork check.
We'd buy a used 462H from a US seller with strong feedback, like the one a US music retailer asks $1,950 for with free shipping, since new ones from US dealers ask $2,990–3,170 and the $2,000–3,125 band mixes new and used. There are at least 21 for sale and used ones mostly ask $1,800–2,300 delivered, so the $1,018 one, about half that, needs a clear photo of the model stamp, and the zero-feedback one at $2,522 is best skipped. Read the model on the body, since a 462H has the B footjoint and gizmo key, a plain 462 has a C foot, and a 362 has only a sterling headjoint on a plated body. Ask when the pads were last serviced and budget for a woodwind tech's check-up, and pass on heavily polished ones, since polishing wears the silver and can damage the pads.

The lowest delivered 462 here at $1,018 from a 100% US seller, titled sterling 925 and open hole. That's about half what other used ones ask and the title names no case, so ask for a photo of the model stamp on the body and what comes with it.
Titled solid sterling silver at $1,800 with free shipping from a 99.8% US seller, $200 under the band. The title doesn't say 462H, so ask which footjoint it has and whether the case comes with it.
A used 462H, so it has the B footjoint, from a 99.6% US music retailer at $1,950 with free shipping, about $1,130 under a new 462H. Ask when the pads were last serviced and whether the case and cover are included.
