Yamaha · Student · YFL-262 · 2016–present
The YFL-262 is Yamaha's open-hole student flute, a YFL-222 with French-style ring keys. Yamaha released it in the US in January 2016 as part of the same refresh, and it shares the 222's silver-plated nickel silver tubing, C footjoint, offset G, CY headjoint and pointed arms on the keys you don't finger. The difference is the five open-hole keys, which Yamaha says give the player more control over tone. Open holes have to be covered squarely by the fingertips, so Yamaha supplies its French-system student and intermediate flutes with key plugs that seal the holes until the player's hands are ready. That makes the 262 a good fit for a student whose teacher wants open holes early, or for a family that wants one flute to carry a child from the first year into high school band. It has no split E mechanism and no B footjoint, and the sterling silver headjoint starts in Yamaha's 300 series. Yamaha sold a YFL-261 before it. Yamaha's US site now lists only the closed-hole 222 in the 200 series, while the European lineup still carries the 262 alongside the split-E 272 and the inline-G 282.
A good first flute when a teacher wants a beginner on open holes, and a natural second flute after a 222. Ask whether the key plugs come with it, since most younger players need them for a while.
Build and caseYFL-262
Go by the model number. Yamaha released the YFL-262 in the US in January 2016, so a 262 dates from then or later. We couldn't find a serial chart that Yamaha publishes for its flutes.
Pads are the usual wear item, and leaks make notes fuzzy or slow to speak. Look out for bent keys from rough assembly, a head cork pushed out of place, and missing key plugs.

Buying guide
We'd buy one of the US 262s titled with a case from a 100% seller, at $685–735 delivered, under the $775–1,025 band most ask. There are at least 9 for sale and four come from zero-feedback accounts, two with the same $7.78 shipping and one titled closed hole, which describes a YFL-222, so skip those or pay only through eBay checkout. A used one from a US music retailer asks $1,392, so a private sale should save you about $650. Ask whether the key plugs for the open holes come with it, look in the photos for bent keys, and have a woodwind tech go over the pads before lessons, since leaks make notes fuzzy or slow to speak.
$685.00est. delivered
The lowest delivered 262 here at $685, titled with its case, from a 100% US seller. There's no condition claim, so ask about the key plugs and plan on a woodwind tech's check-up.
