There's no Gemeinhardt KG4. It isn't in the maker's serial chart, and we couldn't find one for sale or in sold records. The Gemeinhardt that buyers do find under a KG name is the KG Special, a solid silver flute that turns up in used listings as the KG Special or KGB Special, so that's what this page covers. Gemeinhardt's FAQ describes the KGB Special as a conservatory, or step-up, flute with the same solid silver headjoint, body and footjoint as the 3SB, silver-plated keys, its own style of key cups and a gold-plated lip plate. The serial chart lists the KG Special from 1983 to 1987, and the B-foot KGB Special from 1982 to 1991 and again from 2003 to 2010, including a 2007 run with offset G. Sellers usually describe them as open-hole and B-foot, and some mention a gizmo key, so check those details in the photos. It's a solid silver step up from a plated student flute, and since many of these flutes are 30 or more years old, the pads and cork will likely need work.

Gemeinhardt's serial chart lists KG Special serials 80100–81999 for 1983–1987 and KGB Special serials 80000–84599 for 1982–1991, then runs in the 415000s, 691000s and 707000s for 2003–2010. Ask for the serial and the model stamp next to it on the body.
What to check before you buy
Age is the main issue, since most of these flutes date from the 1980s and need pads and corks redone. Solid silver tarnishes, and years of polishing can wear the finish and damage the pads.
01Model and serial: Ask for a photo of the model stamp and serial on the body. Check the serial against Gemeinhardt's chart for the KG Special or KGB Special.
02Silver stamps: Ask for photos of the silver markings on the headjoint, body and footjoint. All three sections should be solid silver.
03Footjoint and holes: Look at the footjoint and keys in the photos. A KGB has the longer B foot, and the listing should say whether the keys are open-hole.
04Pads and leaks: Ask when it was last serviced and for a short video playing low to high. Clear low notes with no buzz or fuzz mean the pads are sealing.
05Head cork: On arrival, slide the cleaning rod into the headjoint and look through the embouchure hole. The line on the rod should sit dead center in the hole.
06Dents and keys: Look along the tubing and rods in the photos, especially near the lip plate. A dent around the embouchure hole is there for good, and every key should sit level.
07Case and cleaning rod: Look for a case and cleaning rod in the photos. A flute this old often comes in a replacement case, which is fine if it fits snugly.
We'd buy a KG Special titled overhauled or just serviced, like the one from a US repairer at $1,339 delivered with its case, since most of these flutes are decades old and need pads and corks redone. There are at least 9 for sale, mostly asking $900–1,525 delivered, and the two cheapest, not titled serviced, ask $601 and $799 with cases, if you'd rather pay a shop yourself. It's a solid silver step-up flute, so ask for photos of the silver marks on all three sections, the model stamp and serial (KG Special, or KGB Special for the B-foot version), and a video playing low to high. Skip the $1,008 listing from a seller with 90% feedback.
